Member for Tweed Geoff Provest today announced the release of the major tender for the project on 12 October 2018, seeking early contractor involvement in the planning, design and delivery of the new hospital.  This marks a major milestone in the delivery of the brand new state-of-the-art hospital for the people of the Tweed-Byron region.

“The NSW Government is committed to delivering the new hospital as soon as possible in order to meet the critical health needs of the growing and ageing population of the Tweed-Byron region,” Mr Provest said.

“We are seeking very early input to the design of the new hospital from the successful contractor. It will allow the experience and innovation ideas from the building sector to work together with Health Infrastructure, Northern NSW Local Health District and the community to ensure every step, from the design to the commissioning of the hospital, reflects best-practice. This will mean that what is delivered for the people of this region is world class.”

Mr Provest said three major contractors had been invited to respond to the tender, after being shortlisted from a larger panel based on criteria which included innovation, maximising local industry participation and upskilling of local workforce, Aboriginal participation and apprenticeship performance targets.

“This project is going to leave a great legacy for the people of the Tweed-Byron region – not only in terms of the healthcare services that the new hospital will support, but in terms of what this will mean for the local workforce and surrounding community,” Mr Provest said.

“Already hundreds of health professionals, consumers, staff and broader community members have helped shape the initial planning for this brand new hospital. We are committed to continuing that input all the way through the delivery process.”

The NSW Government’s $582 million investment in the Tweed-Byron region will deliver a brand new, state-of-the-art hospital on a greenfield site at 771 Cudgen Road, opposite Kingscliff TAFE, as well as interim upgrades at existing Tweed Hospital to help meet community needs until services transfer to the new hospital.

The project consists of:

  • Delivery of a new major referral hospital to provide the health services required to meet the needs of the growing and ageing population of the Tweed-Byron region, in conjunction with the other hospitals and community health centres across the region
  • Master planning for the additional health, education, training and research facilities necessary to support these health services, which will be developed with service partners over time
  • Delivery of the supporting infrastructure required for the new hospital, including greenspace and other amenity spaces, campus roads and car parking, external road upgrades and connections, utilities connections, and other supporting infrastructure.

Works are expected to begin by the end of 2018, with the new hospital completed in 2022 and open in 2023.
