Grassroots sporting organisations and local clubs across the Tweed Shire will benefit from over $1.497 million in funding to help get players back in action across the region.

Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said the NSW Government $12 million Sport Priority Needs Program would support the repair and reconstruction of several community sporting facilities damaged in the February-March 2022 floods with grants of between $15,000 and $500,000.

“This cash injection will provide critical funds to support the repair, restoration and improvement of our local sporting infrastructure following the floods earlier this year,” Mr Provest said.

“Not only will this investment deliver a welcome economic boost, it will help get local sport back in action across our region by carrying out crucial repair works.”

Funded projects in the Tweed Shire LGA include:

  • Bilambil Sports Complex – Clubhouse repairs and upgrades – $62,023.00
  • Brian Breckenridge Field Tumbulgum – Clubhouse repairs and upgrades – $29,591.00
  • Vic Bianchetti Sportsground Uki – Clubhouse repairs and upgrade – $490,000.00
  • Barrie Smith Field Murwillumbah – Upgrades to clubhouse, changerooms and lighting – $240,000

Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the NSW Government is investing in flood affected communities through the program.

“Grassroots sport plays a critical role in the fabric of our communities, keeping people healthy, active and socially connected,” Mr Henskens said.

“This funding will repair and rebuild community sporting facilities that were damaged by the devastating floods earlier this year, and help communities get back playing the sports they love.”

The funding is the first tranche of a $55 million NSW Government commitment to help community sport return in flood affected communities.

The second round of community sport flood funding, totalling $43 million, is now available in 74 LGAs impacted by the February-March and June-July floods.

Applications for the second round close Friday, 9 December 2022. More information is available on the Office of Sport website.
