Flood-affected residents in the Tweed local government area (LGA) are being encouraged to apply for the NSW Government’s at-home caravan program.
Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said at-home caravans are now available to flood-affected residents in the areas of Burringbar, Chinderah, Condong, Mooball, South Murwillumbah and Tumbulgum.
“Residents across the Tweed who have been forced out of their homes by flooding are now able to apply for a caravan which they can use to stay on their properties while they repair and rebuild,” Mr Provest said.
“The flooding this year has been absolutely devastating and we want to continue to find ways to support our communities any way we can.”
Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the program has been successfully trialled in other Northern Rivers communities.
“Caravans have already helped more than 110 households in Woodburn, so it’s wonderful to see them now rolling out to more communities like those in the Tweed LGA,” Ms Cooke said.
“We know housing is our biggest challenge in the Northern Rivers, which is why we’re looking at every opportunity to provide medium-term housing solutions. Work is continuing on the establishment of temporary housing sites across the Northern Rivers to provide safe and secure accommodation during the recovery.”
In addition to the Tweed LGA, the at-home caravan program is being extended to include residents in areas across the Ballina and Lismore LGAs.
Caravans will be sourced from Camplify, and located on the resident’s private property at no cost, with properties assessed during a face-to-face application process between owners and Resilience NSW to ensure it can safely accommodate a caravan.
Residents will be able to register for the at-home caravan program at the Murwillumbah Recovery Centre which is located at Murwillumbah Civic Centre, 10-14 Tumbulgum Road, on Thursday 8 September between 9am and 4pm.
