The NSW Government’s decision to end the Tweed lockdown after just one week is a recognition of locals doing all the right things to stop the spread, Tweed Nationals MP Geoff Provest said.
“While a single case has led to an outbreak elsewhere, it didn’t happen here thanks to the vigilance and discipline of Tweed people,” Mr Provest said.
“I would expect the Queensland Government to now restore the border zone that it previously reinstated earlier this month. It is safe and in the interest of communities on both sides of the State line.”
Mr Provest said the best thing people could now do to lock out future lockdowns was to “get the jab and encourage everyone they know to get the jab.”
“The NSW Government agreed to our request for Sydney travel to remain off limits until the state reaches 80 per cent double vaccination rate, which is a really good thing,” Mr Provest said.
“It is now our job to reach that target as soon as possible so local hospitality businesses can again welcome visitors from outside our area and rebuild our local economy.”
New local government area vaccination stats released on Monday show inoculation rates in the Tweed have risen in the past week from 71.7% to 76.6% for the first dose and from 45% to 48.4% fully vaccinated.
