Opportunities for young people to feel socially and culturally connected to their communities and environment will be key issues discussed at the final meeting of the 2022 Regional Youth Taskforce to be held in Tweed Heads this weekend.
Minister for Regional Youth Ben Franklin said the Taskforce, comprised of 18 members aged 12-24 from across regional NSW, will come together one final time to discuss the topic of Community.
“Young people in the regions have spoken of their desire to have more activities in their communities that allow them to explore their creativity, collaborate and develop a sense of achievement, so I’m keen to explore this further,” Mr Franklin said.
“Offering vibrant arts, cultural and recreational activities in regional areas is an important part of a young person’s life that helps to provide a sense of belonging within a community, which is why the NSW Government’s Holiday Break program and the Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative are so important.”
Mr Franklin said throughout the year the Taskforce members have focused their discussions on each of the Pillars of the Regional Youth Framework, providing valuable perspectives on the challenges for young people living in regional areas.
Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said he is looking forward to welcoming the Taskforce to Tweed for their final meeting.
“I am delighted the Taskforce will be meeting in Tweed, and I look forward to hearing its insights on the issue of ‘Community’ – an issue of great importance to regional youth,” Mr Provest said.
Youth Taskforce member Caitlin Blanch from the New England North West region says being part of a supportive community can empower young people to bring about major changes.
“I have loved being a member on the taskforce because it has allowed me to experience various opportunities, expanding my leadership and awareness, as well as community engagement,” said Ms Blanch.
Following the Regional Youth Taskforce meeting in Tweed Heads, members will tour Parliament House in Sydney on 7 November for their final activity.
